Learners are indeed being shrunk down to their financial potential through the further influence in analytics. As Universities and schools struggle to achieve their stated throughput goals and outcomes with ever decreasing budgets its only natural for them to tun to measures of measurement to determine how to better increase the funds received from their primary generators. That the results of this close analysis and complementary action likely results in successful students is a great outcome.
However, what of students clearly identified early on as not likely to be successful but that still have the potential for providing income for the school or college. In a recent story drawn from several schools in the US it was determined that some schools continued to ply early identified, at risk students, with textbook buying opportunities (for which they made a small percentage) after knowing clearly that those students wouldn’t need them for future studies.
Can we rely on administrators to always act with the learners interests at heart and could sticky situations in which some parts of the learner body is discriminated against on the basis of incomplete or ineffectual data. Does this portent the the rise of a great data bureaucracy?
