Comment on Tweet! Sometimes marketing is about too much bling by cmiller

I’ve been arguing that lecture capture is so “old-hat” that those who haven’t already adopted it should be looking to leap-frog the technology entirely. From a pedagogical perspective, I might expect you to agree with that, though I’m not entirely sure what the alternatives would be, I think they would involve some sort of lo-fi portable recording as per MSCEDC weekly intros, or maybe hi-tech virtual reality or AR lectures, streamed online… anything that improves attendance virtually or in-person would be a productive project to pursue!

From Blogs: A post on Algorithms

I’m reading around algorithms for my digital essay, though the topic will include Plagiarism Detection or similar. I’m also reading over MSCEDC blogs. It’s a great experience. I found this post on Eli’s blog post about Algorithms to be very thought provoking. I wonder if students realise that their work submitted to turnitin is available almost in perpetuity, long after they, and probably their lecturer’s, have left academia…..

Comment on Tweet! Battling with IFTTT again so I can try some alternative tools by cmiller

So much IFTTT frustration abounds on #mscedc. And to think that IFTTT are currently soliciting votes for some award for making our lives easier… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAz_UvnUeuU

From Blogs: The singularity

[spoiler alert] If we combine algorithmic culture and cyberculture, we translate our own atoms in to light particles capable of faster than light travel. The singularity where machine learning happens so fast it is no longer possible to measure it… thanks to Matthew via Eli for that entertaining thought!

Comment on A Mini-ethnography by cmiller

An automicrowebnography! Very nice presentation style too. It really helps to provide pace to your writing.

I’m very interested in your experience initially, as I’m looking through a lense of parts of Kozinet’s work for my ethnography. My finding for my mooc seems to place the community at a very different place from my experience.

When I see your response from the community, I’m more sure that my own conclusions could well prove to stand up to more rigorous debate: namely that we need a specific matrix to account for MOOC communities. They just do not seem to behave like “normal” online communities !

What I mean is that your experience with the community on your mooc and my experience with my mooc appear to be polar opposites, but neither, I think, are adequately covered by the matrix presented by Kozinets!

Comment on Tweet! IFTTT tools that we would recommend by cmiller

I tried to get YouTube playlist and IFTTT working together, but it didn’t work.

I’m loathe to use the “liked” function with youtube because I’d spend more time removing junk from my blog, than I would save from manually cutting and pasting my video link directly. Which is what I’ve taken to do.

I am very impressed with the layout and legibility of your blog though. Something I aspire to, but time is not my own at the moment.

I’m a bit annoyed at the restrictions on our WordPress tbh. We can’t apply our own templates, edit CSS or really do much with it other than pick a theme… or am I missing something!

Cheers,

Colin

Comment on Lifestream, Tweets by cmiller

Excellent production. Not sure if it was intended, but with the audio quality as it was, I felt I was actually eavesdropping on your conversation rather than watching a youtube video!

The idea of MOOCS getting in the way of conversation I’m not sure about. It’s not like our MSCEDC discussion forum is a hotbed of informed debate either…

I never have any trouble learning a language when my ability to communicate, eat, and generally enjoy life depends on it. If you are in a place where you don’t have any choice to speak a language, you might find out that your hunger overcomes any confidence issues 😉

Open means open, and you can take advantage of opportunity to discuss, or not…

I read your post twice and skimmed it several times, went out for some fresh air, then came back to it with a cup of tea, before committing to this comment. I don’t have an existing field of studies to draw upon to make more sense of it than I do. I’m not a scholar by trade, but I embarked on this MSc to learn, and I am interested in what you write because I can feel it scratching away at my brain, even if it’s beyond my initial attempts to unlock its meaning or access the background it comes from.
